How to prepare for an engagement session

A wedding is, without a doubt, one of the most important days in a person’s life. As both brides and grooms know this, the months leading up to the event are usually hectic, with everything planned to perfection by all parties involved.

The wedding portrait (and probably several other photographs from your wedding ceremony) is one of the memories which will most likely hang eternally in the family home. It is, in fact, often the centerpiece of any decorative effort involving the heads of the household and may often be passed down from generation to generation. You don’t want to leave this supremely important piece up to chance.

Engagement shoots may seem like an excess to some, but they are essential in order to determine your compatibility with your photographer. Any jarring differences in personality or artistic vision between yourself and your photographer will be discovered during this photo shoot. In this way, you can consider it a test situation for the wedding day.

Preparation for the wedding pictures is the most critical purpose of engagement photos, but it not as glamorous as the first thing that comes to mind when you mention them. The couple usually thinks of how good the photographer will make them look for wedding invitations. This is an important concern, of course, which is why it is advised that you schedule your engagement photo shoot soon after you set the date for the wedding. As guests will be able to put  their best smiles on when they are informed of a wedding ceremony well in advance of the event, it is best to send out wedding invitations as soon as possible.

As for preparation for the shoot itself, you should come to your photographer with an idea in mind for the location of the photo shoot and then decide together on a location. You should choose a place which is meaningful to you and which meshes well with your identity and personality. If you prefer nature, consider places such as parks, forests, or beaches. A couple with more of an interest in architecture may instead opt for castles, churches, or even city streets in a more metropolitan. These are just some ideas, but a skilled photographer can probably work with almost any type of venue.

Professional photographers know how to best deal with different levels of lighting and the smooth cooperation of colors. This is why you should let your photographer suggest the best time of day to have the session as well as the best hue for clothing appropriate to the situation. Once this advice has been gathered try to be open to suggestions from your photographer and this helps get the very best portraits.

Some people who are not accustomed to posing and photographing may be nervous on the day of the engagement shoot. However, this is counterproductive. You should trust your photographer and have fun with the experience. Remember that the photographer has been hired to make you look your best, so you should not be overly concerned with the direction of the shoot yourself. Try to have fun and enjoy your time so that you can show your best self on camera. Let your confident side come out and it will most defiantly show in your photos!!
