Pupils and staff at Heritage Oak Elementary School enjoyed a taste of success with their recent fundraising event. – The Nacho Challenge! Co-chairs of the Book Fair, Piper Roberts and Julie Welty organized the event. They did great too! Pupils voted on the type of nachos Principal Amy Banks would have to eat during the nacho challenge. The three choices were Healthy, Spicy and Sweet & Sour. Pupils voted by putting their change into one of the three buckets. Each was labeled with these three choices. When all the votes had been counted the winning choice was the Sweet & Sour nacho for the nacho challenge. Ewe. Sounds gross!

The nachos were made by student council members Matt, Luke and Megan. The kids certainly did not hold back when it came to choosing a variety of ingredients. A wide variety. They did make some more traditional nachos with pickles and nacho cheese. Still. Ewe. They soon decided to get even more creative by piling one a heap of inventive ingredient combinations. They loaded nachos with things such as whipped cream, rhubarb, maple and chocolate syrups and even sour candies! Julie said, “The students have been really excited about the thought of Mrs. Banks having eating their nachos. They really got behind the idea of putting Mrs. Banks through the nacho challenge as they know she can be a bit of a picky eater”. Like me. Poor girl.

Principal Banks was not the only staff member to get involved. Custodian Orlando Sandoval and teachers Mike Zatske, Elinor McCormick, Susan Davis, Stacey Clark, Vickie Moersfelder, Holly Enberg and Shelley Stulken all took part in the Nacho Challenge in front of the student body. Whilst everyone gave it their all some enjoyed it more than others. Principal Banks commented that the rhubarb nachos didn’t taste too good, while Mr. Zatske declared they were the “best nachos I have ever eaten!”

Not only was the Nacho Challenge lots of fun but all in aid of a good cause. The donations helped to raise a total of $175.00 for the All for Books program. This enabled Librarian, Denise Ansari, to purchase books for the school library. The brilliant effort of the students and teachers meant she was able to buy an incredible 2,075 books! The school was not the only one to benefit. The people from Scholastic Book Fairs kindly offered to match these donations.  They made contributions to two worthy non-profit organizations and are Kids In Need Foundation and Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. Both organizations work to help families in need. Always a great cause.

Such a fun event. Well done to everyone at Heritage Oak Elementary School who donated money or took part in the Nacho Challenge. Plus, a special thanks to Principal Banks. No doubt pleased she will not have to eat sour candy or rhubarb nachos during a nacho challenge again!
