World Book Day

World Book Day celebrates the world of reading and books, along with the authors, and the illustrators who create them. World Book Day may also be called World Book and Copyright Day, or International Day of the Book or World Book Days depending on where you are located in the world. World Book Day was designed by UNESCO to be a world celebration of books, and now takes place in over 100 countries worldwide; also, World Book Day has been enjoyed in space at the International Space Station. World Book Day is to hopefully encourage children to start enjoying reading at an early age, which may lead them to enjoy reading into adulthood.

 

World Book Day started in 1995, and has been celebrated each year. The date of World Book Day does have special meaning behind it in the library world. It is set on the date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. Other events include births and deaths of other major authors.

The reason that World Book Day was created was to encourage children to explore the huge world of reading. World Book Day also offers children the chance to have a book of their own, each year there is a different selection of books available for them to choose from. Many schools and libraries have celebration of events for you and your child to visit and enjoy.

You can also have your own celebration at home if you cannot make it to the events. Sitting down and reading books together can be a great activity to celebrate with your child on World Book Day. Or you can let your child create their own book for you both to enjoy reading. You can always dress up as your favorite character from a book or comic to celebrate World Book Day.

So, what should you read? You can head to your local library with your child and let them pick what they want to read. This activity allows them to explore the world of the library and books. Most libraries have a section just for children’s books, so let them look through the books that are offered and let them pick out a few they would like you to read to them, or that they can read by themselves. You can also ask a Liberian what books are being celebrated this year for World Book Day, and about other events happening at the library.

World Book Day can be enjoyed by everyone of any age, and with any type of book you enjoy. World Book Day celebrates the knowledge books give us, and the power they have to change our lives for the better. It is very easy and enjoyable to celebrate World Book Day, just curl up with a good book and enjoy; or sit down and read to someone who cannot read themselves. Millions of people are enjoying a book or ten on World Book Day, so why not join the fun?
