When that special time comes around for your child, you’ll want to soak up every second. Documenting the fun is an important responsibility that will preserve the happy memories of this day forever.

Festive Accents
Whether you decide to capture your cake smash photos in the moment of the party or decide to set up a separate, privately styled shoot, it’s a good idea to do some planning beforehand. If you’re taking your sweetie pie’s pics prior to the one year mark, you’ll want to choose a place that can get messy because it absolutely will. Weather permitting, you can get some adorable images on a blanket in the grass outside. Alternatively, you can hire a photographer who has a studio built for just this sort of thing. Adding a bit of themed decorations to the setting always makes things a little bit cuter. Balloons, banners and confetti are all fun elements that will bring the story to life. Adding a first birthday sign is a great way to mark the day. Some parents even like to make a recap board of year one that lists all of their baby’s milestones and personality traits. This can include most used words, favorite pastimes, as well as nicknames. It’s a wonderful means of remembering the details of your child’s disposition during this time in their life.

Special Outfits
The next thing to consider is the wardrobe and color scheme of the shoot. You may want to include a teeny little party hat to commemorate the celebration. (It’s also insanely adorable) You might have a certain celebratory shirt that you picked out specifically for the occasion, or you may just choose to keep things simple with only a diaper. It’s hard to mess up this part because obviously the outcome will be cute no matter what your birthday babe is wearing! However, it can be super fun to personalize things a little bit with some accessories that showcase your child’s character. For example, if you have a little princess on your hands, a tiara or some faux pearls make a darling addition. For the handsome gentlemen, a miniature bow tie could not possibly be any sweeter. This is also a great time to highlight the first year mark by using a shirt or hat that has the number or word “one” printed on it.

Priceless Moments
Overall, this experience is going to be an unforgettable one and the images you capture will be cherished for years to come. Your angel’s smiling face is one of the most precious memories of parenthood. That said, the most important thing about this photoshoot is to enjoy it and have a good time with your baby. Encourage them to be silly and fun while they celebrate their big day. Laugh at one of the only messes that you actually want them to make and hold them close while you can… even if that means getting covered in icing. It’s totally worth it, I promise.
